April 2026 – Tianan Electric’s four units of 110/15kV power transformers for Rwanda have successfully completed the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT). The acceptance inspection was jointly carried out by Rwanda’s Energy Development Corporation Limited (EDCL) and Energy Utility Corporation Limited (EUCL), spanning a total of 20 days.
The four transformers, consisting of two units of 20MVA and two units of 30MVA, are destined for Gikondo in the central urban area of Rwanda’s capital, Kigali. They will serve as key equipment at the local power hub, providing stable and reliable power transmission and distribution for the city.
Strict Requirements for Core Urban Power Supply, High Standards for Acceptance Testing
As a core urban district of Kigali, Gikondo is a crucial node in Rwanda’s national power network. The area features high-density electricity demand, placing stringent requirements on power supply continuity and equipment stability. Given that the transformers will be delivered via sea and land transportation over long distances, and considering the limited local maintenance capacity, EDCL and EUCL set exceptionally high standards for quality control and process management of the 110kV power transformers.
In executing the project, Tianan Electric carried out proactive risk screening during the factory phase, ensuring that the equipment can be directly installed and commissioned upon arrival in Rwanda, thereby reducing on-site commissioning risks.
Pre-FAT Factory Inspection Establishes Solid Foundation, Deep Client Engagement in Quality Control
Prior to the official start of the FAT, a four-member delegation from EDCL and EUCL visited Tianan’s core manufacturing workshops, including the core lamination workshop, winding workshop, tank welding workshop, final assembly shop, and high-voltage test hall. The delegation focused on the following:
Raw material quality and procurement traceability records for silicon steel sheets, electromagnetic wires, and other materials
Process execution in key manufacturing steps such as winding, assembly, and drying
Process control documentation and inspection records under the ISO quality management system
The client representatives acknowledged Tianan Electric’s production capabilities, technical strength, and quality system, establishing an efficient communication framework for the subsequent 20-day intensive testing process.
20-Day Rigorous Testing: Comprehensive Routine and Special Tests Completed
The Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) included all standard routine tests as well as additional special type tests tailored to the high standards of the Rwanda project:
| Test Category | Test Items | Standard Applied |
|---|---|---|
| Routine Tests | DC resistance measurement of windings, voltage ratio and vector group, no-load loss and current, load loss and short-circuit impedance, separate-source AC withstand voltage, induced AC withstand voltage | IEC 60076 |
| Special Tests | Temperature rise test, lightning impulse test, noise test | IEC 60076 |
All test data was witnessed and confirmed on-site by the Rwandan client representatives. Tianan’s testing team worked closely with the client to ensure rigorous data collection and full traceability throughout every step.
Swift Response to Improvement Requests, Efficient Closure Recognized by Client
During the acceptance process, the client representatives proposed several detailed improvement items based on on-site observations. Tianan’s transformer team responded promptly, formulated corrective plans for each item, and completed the improvements within the agreed timeframe with high quality. In addition, a complete accessory documentation package was prepared and submitted to the client.
EDCL and EUCL representatives commended Tianan’s cooperation, execution efficiency, and quality of rectification, noting that these reflected the professionalism expected from a Chinese power equipment manufacturer.
Successful Completion of FAT: Strengthening International Cooperation
After 20 days of sequential testing and validation, all test results for the four main transformers met the technical specifications and IEC international standards, marking the successful completion of the FAT.
The successful delivery of this project carries multiple significant implications:
Market: Further consolidates Tianan Electric’s delivery capability and quality reputation in the African power equipment export market
Technical: Validates Tianan’s technical strengths in temperature rise control, dielectric strength, and low-noise design for 110kV class power transformers
Partnership: Deepens the strategic cooperation with Rwanda’s national power companies EDCL and EUCL, laying a foundation for future power infrastructure projects in East Africa
Social Contribution: Provides solid support for the stable upgrading of power infrastructure in the central area of Rwanda’s capital, contributing to local economic and social development
