XGN Gas Insulated Switchgear (C-GIS): Unchanged Rating at 5,000m Altitude – Robust Power Supply for Chilean Copper Mines
Latest company news about XGN Gas Insulated Switchgear (C-GIS): Unchanged Rating at 5,000m Altitude – Robust Power Supply for Chilean Copper Mines

High Altitude: A Natural Enemy of Switchgear Equipment

Most Chilean copper mines are located in the Andes Mountains, at altitudes ranging from 3,000 to 4,500 meters. For every 1,000 meters of altitude gain, air insulation strength decreases by approximately 10%, and heat dissipation efficiency drops by more than 8%. Conventional air-insulated switchgear requires derating above 2,000 meters, and most fail to operate properly above 4,000 meters.

For mining operations, a single hour of power outage can result in losses of up to millions of US dollars. Sustained and stable power supply is an uncompromisable bottom line.

XGN Solution: Isolating Core Components from Hostile Environments

The key advantage of Gas Insulated Switchgear (C-GIS) lies in fully enclosing high-voltage live parts within a hermetically sealed gas tank. With constant internal pressure, its insulation performance is unaffected by external altitude – this is the fundamental difference between gas insulation and air insulation.

The design philosophy of XGN is concise and precise: shielding all uncontrollable environmental factors such as thin air, conductive dust, and severe earthquakes outside the stainless steel gas tank.

Five Robust Technical Parameters of XGN

  • Unchanged rating at 5,000m altitude: Clearly marked in the product manual as "altitude ≤ 5,000 meters", covering all mining areas in Chile. Insulation parameters are verified at rated pressure, remaining stable regardless of altitude changes with no on-site conversion required.
  • Annual leakage rate ≤ 0.1% (≤1‰) – no gas refilling needed over service life: Guaranteed by stainless steel tank construction, laser welding, and double-layer sealing rings. At this leakage rate, internal pressure remains above the minimum functional threshold even after 20 years.
  • Ingress protection rating IP67 – impenetrable to mine dust: Fully sealed design of core high-voltage compartments effectively blocks highly concentrated conductive dust, eliminating creepage and fire risks at the source.
  • Seismic resistance grade 8 – tailored for earthquake-prone regions: Chile is one of the world’s most seismically active countries. Through structural mechanics optimization, XGN maintains structural integrity without deformation or displacement even under severe seismic activity.
  • Full-load operation at rated current 2000–2500A: Sealing and heat dissipation represent the biggest contradiction for gas-insulated switchgear. XGN resolves temperature rise issues by optimizing gas tank structure to increase heat dissipation area and using extended bushings to reserve inter-cabinet space for enhanced heat exchange.

Three Selection Recommendations for Chief Engineers

For the special conditions of high-altitude mining areas, switchgear selection logic must be adjusted accordingly:

  1. Prioritize altitude certification over correction factors: Require third-party test reports confirming insulation compliance at 5,000 meters. The XGN manual directly specifies "altitude ≤ 5,000m" with no on-site conversion needed.
  2. Focus on sealing class rather than cabinet thickness alone: Conductive mine dust cannot be blocked by ordinary IP4X protection. The XGN core gas tank achieves IP67, preventing ingress of fine dust and moisture.
  3. Insist on leakage rate indicators over verbal promises: An annual leakage rate ≤ 0.1% provides physical assurance for a 20-year service life. Gas tightness after five years of operation depends on welding technology and sealing ring material.

Conclusion

In Chilean mining areas, extreme environments are not occasional incidents but daily realities.
